Alcohol Shrinks Your Brain
|
|
What's good for the heart isn't necessarily good for the brain.
While conventional wisdom emphasizes the health benefits of wine or 'one alcoholic beverage per day', there is a price that comes with it.
Alcohol kills brain cells
A recent study at the Boston University School of Public Health has shown that even moderate amounts of alcohol results in the shrinking of the brain. This is one of many studies that have been conducted over the years.
Human brain mass normally deteriorates about 2% per decade on average for adults. Those who drink alcohol have been shown have a smaller brain mass as a result of alcohol.
With men, only those who were 'heavy drinkers' showed the reduction in brain mass. However, with women, even light or moderate alcohol usage affected their brain mass.
In the study of 1,839 healthy people, the average difference in brain mass between drinkers and non-drinkers was about 1.5%. While this may not seem staggering, it's something to keep in mind when you're ordering that extra shot of wild turkey at the bar.
Heavy alcohol usage also leads to dementia, and even moderate alcohol usage can result in other problems down the road.
It's safe to say that if you do decide to have one or two drinks a day, for other health benefits, you should wait until you're middle-aged.
